The 40th Reunion took place on August 31st 2019 at Townhill Park House as planned. It turned out to be an incredible day with 58 attendees, including Ralph Coney and 38 former classmates. Also making an appearance was Rich Gardiners famous Morris Minor back once more where it was once reborn.
A WALK BACK IN TIME!
For those who stayed at Townhill Park House back in 1979 and 1980 it was an unforgettable experience and The Gregg School had given us full access to all areas of the house and grounds so members were keen to point out which rooms they lived in to fellow guests, spouses and partners. There were many happy memories and the detailed recollection of some people was truly amazing. The structure of the building has changed little though most of the upstairs rooms are now classrooms. It was truly a walk back in time.
ARRIVAL
On arrival all guests were given badges to assist with identification courtesy of Sharon and Anna Cookson, my wife and daughter. Naturally whilst some of us have retained our youthful looks and charm time has been quite cruel to some so the badges were a great help in identifying people that had not seen each other for nearly 40 years.
Richard and a few early arrivals had set up tables in the main hall for dinner. The caterers had set up the bar in one of the front rooms.
Guests were treated to glasses of bubbly and rather tasty canapes outside to start. It did start raining at this stage but the rain only lasted a short time and it dried up again quite quickly. Ralph Coney mingled with former classmates and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Before his departure he was presented with a photo of the Class of 79 signed by all former classmates who attended the reunion. He was exceptionally grateful for the invitation and for seeing so many of us. How we all wished we could be as active when we are his age!
DINNER
Dinner was a great buffet provided in the main hall and well organised by the caterers, PP Catering & Events who had also organised the bubbly and canapes and the bar. A bottle of white wine and a bottle of red wine were provided on each table so there was plenty of drink and food.
After dinner guests were again free to wander around. Music was provided by a live band who set up in the main hall. Pizza was served in the garden later in the evening but like a few others by the time I got to it there was none left. I wonder who ate all that?
Richard, Alison myself and my wife Sharon were presented with flowers, chocolates and a limited edition bottle of HMS Prince of Wales Gin by Jim Bennett on behalf of everyone who attended. It was a great honour and very thoughtful. We offer our thanks to Jim and those who contributed.
THE FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPH
Th chaps were photographed with those from the original 1979 photo in approximately the same positions and those who joined after 1979 or were mising on the original filling in.
The Ladies then joined us.
Guests continued to socialise throughout the evening and were entertained by the live band in the main hall. It was great music and a lovely singer. There were a few dad and mum dances and as always, particularly at our ages, the ladies well outshone the men . Alas we were sadly let down by the Top Rank troupe who entertained us back in 1983 but who failed to take the floor, despite all being present.
THANKS AND FAREWELL
Thanks to PP Catering for the food, bar and the service and the members of the band who played so well. Richard did exceptionally well in organising the catering and entertainment, good choices.
Of course no matter what goes in to these events the success is only down to the attendees. Having heard of and seen so many uncomfortable school and even regimental reunions I am sure all those involved would agree, the event was an incredible success and was purely down the positive nature of all those who attended, including wives, partners and daughters.
Until the next time chaps!
